What is Title Insurance?
Title Insurance is a general insurance policy that insures title to land and buildings to cover particular risks as set out within and subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
Who can take out this sort of cover?
Any UK or Irish citizen who owns a property in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Southern Cyprus, Spain or Turkey.
Why should I take out this policy?
The policy will allow you to buy and own your property with peace of mind and provide a safety net in respect of those problems that can arise and affect property in an unfamiliar market place. In addition First Title will bear all legal costs and expenses in defending the title to your home and will ultimately compensate you, up to the Policy Amount, if you lose title to your home or the value of your home is reduced as a result of the title defect covered by the policy, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
What the policy will cover?
Typical risks covered*
The policy covers a wide range of issues such as*
- Someone else owning the land that you have purchased
- The sellers or a predecessors lender claims there is an unpaid mortgage secured on your home
- Someone builds a structure which encroaches onto your land
- Forged documents of title
- Incorrectly signed or notarised document
- Invalid power of attorney used in the transaction
- Access right problems

What do the options cover?
Cover for your buyer - to help you with any future sale of your property, the policy can be extended to cover your buyer.
- Inheritance Cover - the coverage provided by the policy is extended to include those who will inherit the property upon your death
- Inflation Cover - the sum insured under the policy to increase in line with any increase in your property's value subject to a maximum of twice the initial sum insured
Can I increase the sum insured if I wish to in the future?
No, if you wish to protect the value of your property, please refer to the additional inflation coverage option, which has been designed with this in mind
Does the policy cover planning issues?
No not online, but these can be considered in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain or Turkey offline, please contact one of our underwriters on +44 (0)870 389 1690 for further details, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5.30 pm
What will the policy not cover?
Typical risks not covered include*
- Environmental and contamination risk
- Compulsory acquisition/development of the land
- Violation of planning laws
- Rights of public utility undertakers to carry out work on or affecting the property
- Liability for outstanding taxes
- Physical damage or deterioration to your home
- Loss or damage by such things as fire or storm, theft of possessions or the breakdown of mechanical services. A home insurance policy will provide you with protection for these things
- The policy does not insure problems created by you or which you are aware of when you purchased

Who should a customer telephone if they wish to discuss a policy?

What happens if a customer wants to cancel a policy after it has been issued?
You must contact First Title at specialistproducts.team@firsttitle.eu If it is within the 14 day cooling off period a full refund (subject to any currency fluctuations between the date of the premium being paid and the date of the refund) will be made. If it is outside of this period there is no refund
How will the policy be renewed?
There is no need to renew the policy, as it will continue to protect you throughout your period of ownership
What taxes apply and will I have to pay them separately?
Please refer to the premium table where the tax for each individual country has been itemised. The applicable taxes will be added to the premium and collected at point of sale and First Title Insurance plc will be responsible for remitting the tax to the appropriate bodies
What do I need to do if I wish to claim on the policy?
All claims must be directed to claims@firsttitle.eu or sent by post to Title House, 33-39 Elmfield Road, Bromley, Kent BR1 1LT
How many claims can I have?
There is no limit to the number of claims, however, the value of the claim/claims is limited to the sum insured and the policy amount will be reduced by each claim
How do I make a complaint about the insurance product?
